Dates have been a staple food in Middle Eastern cuisine for thousands of years, and have been considered by many to have incredible healing powers. There are so many varieties, with well over 30 kinds of dates that can be found around the world. They have often been lauded as a delicious sweet treat, but they are also full of natural goodness. Dates are a good source of vitamins and minerals, energy, and fibre, containing many minerals such as calcium, iron, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and zinc. The date is also dubbed as the healthier substitute for sugar, as it does not contribute empty calories (unlike refined sugars).

Here is why they are sooo good…

1. They help to balance cholesterol. Did you know that dates are free from cholesterol and contain very little fat? Including them in your daily diet can help you keep your cholesterol levels in check, and can even assist in weight loss plans.

2. They are high in protein, so they help us to get strong muscles and feel fighting-fit! If you are a regular gym bunny, then 2-3 dates a day are going to help assist you in your quest for a good, toned body.

3. They are high in vitamins. Dates contain vitamins such as B1, B2, B3 and B5, as well as A1 and C. They also help to keep energy levels high because they contain natural sugars such as glucose, sucrose, and fructose.

4. They protect your bones. Dates can do wonders for your bone health too, as they are rich in selenium, manganese, copper, and magnesium. All of these are required when it comes to keeping our bones healthy and preventing conditions such as osteoporosis.

5. They calm the nervous system. Dates are very beneficial for your nervous system, as they are loaded with potassium and yet contain very little sodium, which goes a long way in keeping your nervous system balanced. The potassium also helps to reduce cholesterol and helps to fight the risk of stroke.

6. They are rich in iron. Iron is highly recommended for those who suffer from anaemia (iron deficiency). Severe iron-deficiency anaemia may cause fatigue or tiredness, shortness of breath and/or chest pain. Eating dates regularly will help keep your iron levels up to combat these symptoms.

7. Dates promote a healthy digestive system. If you soak a few dates in water and chew on them daily, your digestive system will thank you! Due to its high fibre content, it is also recommended for those who have trouble with constipation.

8. They are fabulous for skin health. Due to their high Vitamin C and D content, dates are great for keeping the skin’s elasticity intact and keeping it smooth and clear. If you suffer from skin problems, incorporating dates into your diet might help you in the long run. Dates also come with anti-ageing benefits and prevent the accumulation of melanin in your body.

9. They are great hangover cures! Because of the massive amount of goodness in dates, they can actually be great for hangovers. For best results, you have to rub the skin a bit, soak it in water overnight and then eat.
